Kyphoplasty is a procedure used to treat painful fractures of the spine known as vertebral compression fractures. Surprisingly, some compression fractures are painless in which case they are not treated with Kyphoplasty.
Kyphoplasty is different from vertebroplasty in that it uses a small balloon to create space and restore the height to the vertebrae. Then a cement is injected into the space created by the balloon which solidifies and maintains the height.
